I'm in the later group, the PITA of having that thing back there, never mind the cost, is well worth skipping it in favour of better cheaper alternatives in MY case, YMMV.
as an example, for me on a trip to Florida (I towed a friends car on a dolly as a favour) it took about 1.2 mpg extra to drag the car (Honda Civic) along. I get almost exactly 8 mpg with no toad. I got 6.8 mpg pulling his car.
On a round trip from Toronto to Florida that means the difference between 375 gallons (solo) and 440 gallon ns pulling the toad. At an average price of $2.35 / gallon that 65 gallons costs ~$150. I can rent a car for $25 / day or take taxis for half of that.
It just (in my case) makes ZERO sense.
Mr. Jax,
First, I'm not here to change your mind but we had a completely different experience with 'not' towing. For the first three years of renting RV's ('04,'05'06) before our purchase in '07 buying an '08 Dynasty, we rented cars at our destinations.
What a pain in the beeee-hind. A couple of times, the type of car that we wanted was not available... wanted a small sedan, got a mini-van in Reno, NV. In Sedona, AZ, they would not rent a car unless you flew in on an airplane into the area (I'm not kidding). So, we found a secondary rental company that rented used cars. We rented a nice late model Mercedes ML320.
In Guerneville, CA, no rental cars available. A couple of times, Enterprise could not come and pick us up (employee shortage... in Napa Valley area in the RV and in Riverside, CA when we came in on the train).
I have no idea how much fuel we use towing as we ALWAYS have our Honda with us. I have pulled it 2,000 miles and did not use it. But, it's there just in case. It only weighs 3,400 lbs., not even noticeable.
Just another perspective,
MM.
