People look at the "breather" and assume it works. Best to remove it and blow out the entire mess to make sure it's clear.
It only takes a blob of grease or some dirt in the tube to let enough pressure build up and push gear oil out of the seal.
It's also important to make sure gear oil is not over filled.
"Running out the hole" can be grossly over-filled on some vehicles, especially those that specify measuring the oil with a piece of wire to make sure it's an inch or so BELOW the opening. Not all differentials have the same recommended oil levels and if overfilled the oil sitting on a seal in one side will definitely leak.
