when does one have to replace LP tanks?

It's a 2000, so it's already 14 yrs old & being in the Chicago area, gets all types of weather. Do I need to worry? How soon should I look into it?

Wire brush the rust off and give it a couple good coats of rustoleum, or equivalent.
