We've bought vehicles and multiple RV's out of state. Only once did one purchase pay the sales tax directly, because they were a reciprocal state. We usually figured it separately and pay out of pocket. One time, we had them figure in financing and they gave us a check back for amount at closing. They were off $$$ and had a delay since we had to send a separate check for difference.
This is because depending on the State and the County, each one has different DMV registration fees and rates. I don't know why you expect a dealer to make the call to your local office, when it's much easier for you as a residence to go to the County Courthouse or DMV and find out an estimated registration amount.
