Winnebago recommends having the engine running when extending and retracting slides and when extending and retracting levelers. Here's a quote from page 10-4 of the 2011 Sunova operators manual.
NOTE: We recommend that you KEEP THE
ENGINE RUNNING WHILE
EXTENDING OR RETRACTING
SLIDEOUT ROOMS so the engine
alternator can provide maximum power
for proper operation of the slideout
mechanisms.

If you have the Lippert slide and leveling system it needs 12.7 volts to operate properly. The "Low Battery" message will appear (and shut the system down) if the voltage level falls below 12.7 volts. Since 12.8 volts is considered a full charge almost any power draw in addition to the leveling or slide system will cause the voltage to drop below the required level
When the engine is running the alternator can supply up to 14.3 volts if necessary. If the battery is not fully charged the shore power charger is not strong enough to keep the batteries to the proper lveel with the heavy draw the slides and leveling system require.
