When I bought my motorhome and brought it home, my Father in Law came out to see it. I say came out because he and his wife (remarried after mother in law died) live in an "in-law" apartment in my house......FOR FREE!!So he came out and looked over the MH and then said that I should put it at the beach for the summers so he can use it up there. Then when I want to use it I can just drive the 2 hours to the beach to get it. Then when I am done I can bring it back for him. It does not end there. He had ZERO intentions of paying for the seasonal site at the beach and he was not joking about any of it.He feels that my wife and I should pay for the MH, the campsite, the propane and everything else. This is on top of the fact the he lives in our house for free. They don't give us a dime towards taxes, water, sewage or anything else for that matter. He has a comfortable union retirement and his wife works a union job so they are not poor.Am I crazy for this making my blood boil or is he crazy for thinking its my job to fund his retirement?

You allowed this to take place and only you can do something about it.

I think you're being nice and relaxed considering the situation.

I feel like I should notify the local authorities.....as a serous crime is about to be committed.

You moved into a situation that had already been established. That's hard.

You are related to a selfish inconsiderate person by marriage. Unless the marriage ends, or one of the 3 of you die, you have to consider all involved before you can make any changes (that includes the grown kids). That's almost impossible.

It's really easy for people to say "throw him out" - they don't have to deal with the aftermath of the action. You have to consider your relationship with your wife, your kids, etc. Throwing him out could create a bigger problem than having to listen to him spend your money.

Vent when and where you can. And remember, you've only dealt with his selfishness for about 30 years, your wife has dealt with it all her life.

Don't think so. Such people create state of mind that you owe them.
Since FIL was original owner of the house and the selling procedure not settle that, he might think he deserves the benefits.
Just like one of our Presidents told us that "you deserve" and everybody believe him, what eventually created market collapse and lot of foreclosures.
Hopefully foreclosure is not the case in this situation.

I'm glad you came to sensible solution for now. My other suggestion would be to involved your FIL in your finances, no details but info sharing on what might be helpful for them to continue the present arrangement as manageable as possible.
Just make him aware of some of the expenses that prevents you from giving him as much leeway on the thing he want to do with your MH, and other things he might have taken for granted and not aware of.Just be frank with him and tell him the things he is suggesting are fine but financial constraint is preventing you from doing it.

When we do go to the beach the FIL can come and visit for a day but he is not allowed to stay. It makes my wife happy to have him visit and it makes me happy to see him leave. So we are both happy.

The next time you think your life is screwed up, remember my story and be thankful that your living arrangement is different.

I must say I have read every post here and I simply don't understand the OP one bit.You only have one life to live.I would never ever put myself in a situation that makes me hate the people around me.Just would not happen .The FIL (if I had one) would never ever be living under my roof and if he did it would not be free
