I've flown enough commercial flights to have made two emergency landings where I ended up being bussed to my final destination. Basically I hate commercial aviation but it is a necessary evil if you have to travel overseas.
That said, I loved flying in my private airplanes. There is nothing quite like flying over some of the National Parks and other beautiful areas of this country at low level vrs 35,000 feet. Being able to drop in to one of the hundreds of general aviation airports usually puts you very close to the sights and ultimate destinations of the area. It also takes an all day driving experience in an RV down to a few hours, weather permitting. From a cost standpoint, general aviation is about as expensive as a Class A RV and the fuel mileage for the airplane will be better. Naturally you are limited with the amount of baggage you can take with you. A combination of RV and airplane worked for us for several years. Now, except for overseas travel, we prefer longer trips in the RV.
