Will this tow that?

Hi all--concerned about a friend who has never owned a Class A and has never towed. Without input, he purchased a 2014 34' Allegro Open Road with Ford V-10. He is going to tow a 2014 Ford Explorer on a two axle flatbed car hauler. Seems to me that he is asking an awful lot from his equipment. What say you??

He will be over weight for the towed.

Most Gassers have a 5,000 pound hitch and a MGCVW in teh 26000 pound or less range, Some few are higher. My Workhorse is one of thiese (26000 MCGVW)

So since the MH is 22000 that leaves me with only 4000 to tow. plus since I use a drop hitch adapter the 5,000 pound hitch gets derated too (I tow 2500 pounds.
  • I think he will be sorry. A few hundred lbs over weight, you can get away with, but 3K lbs, is more than a few lbs.
There is a solution - do not use the trailer. Tow the Explorer 4 down. Ford Fleet pdf says if you run the engine every 5 hours to cool the trans, the Explorer can be flat towed.
    See page 11:

Anyone who thinks they want to tow a car on a trailer is fooling themselves once they get to the camp ground anyway. Dealing with a trailer is a pain. No reason not to flat tow the Explorer.

Won't be a problem and that V-10 is the best gas choice for towing....Neighbor has same unit and has bee towing a 32ft enclosed race car trailer all over the East coast with it for several years with zero problems and it tows excellent. He says you don't even know its is back there. That being said many of you should think of ways to DO things and not find reasons to NOT DO things. Its the "get er done" people that aren't missing much in this up tight world!!!!!!

I cannot believe this stuff shows up on here. Just ignore the facts and numbers and everyone else's safety. This mode of thinking is not only idiotic, it's dangerous. If someone heeding this advice ever took out my family I would own everything you have. Ignoring laws is NOT the way to do things. Frankly I like to do things the right way and have concern for others as well.

since he is "all in" there's not much you can do. almost certainly the hitch on his Allegro is rated for 5000-lbs and almost just as certainly his Explorer + trailer weighs in at or more than 5K.

the maximum amount of weight he can safely tow will be the lesser of the following:

    - the GCWR minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded for travel (food, fuel, water, LP, clothing, supplies, pets, people and misc. stuff); OR

    - the weight rating of the MH hitch (Class II 3500-lbs, Class III 5000-lbs, Class IV 10,000-lbs); OR

    - the weight rating of your towbar

    wish him luck.
  • You can do whatever you want to do but that is asking for trouble in the long run. Truck is about 4900 pounds and trailer will be about 2500 pounds making a total of 7400 pounds. With fuel and other items in the trailer you are up to about 8000 pounds. The motor home is rated to tow 5000 pounds. If he wanted to do that he should have bought a diesel with a 10000 pound tow capacity
  • It will undoubtedly be overweight.
However, he just might tow it with no trouble. There are many rigs on the road every day that are anywhere from a couple hundred pounds to a ton (or more) overweight, and nothing happens.
I towed a fifth wheel at 1,280 lbs. over truck GCWR. No trouble.
At least, the trailer WILL have brakes, and he will be able to back up.

What do the numbers say? My guess would be no. The trailer and toad would exceeed either the hitch or GCWR. But you need to do the math.
  • The Explorer weighs between 4500-4900 pounds, empty. His hitch is probably rated at 5000 pounds. If he has a very very light trailer, and makes sure that the Explorer is out of fuel, it should be no problem. :B
