wind

Just bought class c motorhome Leperchaun 27foot total. 2019
So driving in wind seems like a much harder job than towing a 5th wheel which we have also owned or a bumper pull.
Is this just something I need to get use to ? Of maybe I was just in some real hard wind. WOuld a longer one work better? It does have large sway bars on it front and back
  • We have a 24ft Class C on a Chevy 450 chassis. Just drove from Vail, Az.(S. Tucson)to Orange County, Ca. Had a few hard wind gusts that got my attention but over-all it is something you get used too when driving a big box down the road.
  • Having the correct tire pressure is essential for proper handling. Two days ago I drove our 24’ C towing my cargo trailer (6 x 10’ - 7’ tall which weighs 2200#) from Casper Wyoming to Shoshone 95 miles in 35 gusting to 50 mph. Was not fun but was doable.

    :C
  • Drove home in strong winds missing my front roadmaster sway bar . The bracket broke and took the control arm with it. However, I have not driven my rig without one since it was on there when I purchased it

huge difference in control in the wind. Also i could feel someone passing me before I noticed them there. Keep in mind that wind topples fully loaded big rigs. I drove a 45 foot class A from Kansas and it was

scary at times. To say that a Ford is more likely to handle poorly in the wind than another brand is just silly. That's like saying a Peterbilt is more likely to topple over than a Kenworth.
  • Ford chassis? IMO, it's a Ford thing but you will get used to it. The Born Free I had was also frisky in a cross-wind. The mechanic checked the alignment and found nothing amiss. I did find that, on very windy days, it handled better if my tanks were full.

Have you ever seen a sailboat tacking? That's what you're driving now...a sail. Wait until you hit a big gust.....it'll scare the bageevers outta ya.
  • Yes, you will need to get use to it.
A trailer, whether a 5er or bumper pull, have the advantage of the tow vehicle breaking the impact when going into the wind.
  • We get a lot of wind at 31'- I think you just have to get used to it. Firmer sway bars also help.
