I don't believe the butyl tape is going to do what you want. It will keep oozing out, and with the movement of the glass in the mounting area, you will end up with voids that will leak, because the tape never sets up. I would call a glass company and explain what you have, and what you are trying to do, and get their opinion on what to do for a lasting seal.
