Windshield rock ding

Hi,

I got a small rock ding in the windshield a couple of weeks ago that I think can be fixed. A quarter will cover it, so it's not very big...yet! I was quoted $65 to fix it, or, the glass company will claim it on my insurance(AARP The Hartford). I know insurance companies waive deductible on windshield damage, but we all fear substanttial insurance premium increases after a claim is submitted, so I'm heasitate to claim this with the insurance.
Has anyone had experience with a situation like this? What do y'all think is the best course of action, pay for the repair myself out-of-pocket, or file an insurance claim.

Thanks,
Jim
  • I had my similar ding repaired for ~$65, State Farm Insurance would not cover the repair. I just got another one this week. Better $65 than a cracked windshield that would take a lot of time to repair, and my $100 deductible and potentially increased rates?
  • Not all insurance companies waive deductibles on windshield repair...what does your policy/ins. do

Personally......I pay for insurance and file claims when I have a covered loss. That's why I have insurance.
And if premiums go to high I shop around for new insurance.
  • I've had several repaired by that mobile windshield company. Works great you can't even see it when they are done. And one of them is on my car that I did eons ago.

When you call them out they will ask you how your were referred. Tell them your insurance company (even if they didn't) and the glass company will give you an automatic discount.

I ALWAYS pay cash for it. You dont know down the road if it will happen again or on a different vehicle you have.

Don't care who you have for insurance it DOES go on your record they might not raise your rates but if you switch companies they see it and it does not always show up that it was just a crack repair. Seen that happen with my friends and it was AARP.
  • With the lousy roads here in Kalifornia, I have had two windshields replaced and currently have dings in all three of my vehicles. Two have been "repaired" and the 3rd is too large. All have been fixed or replaced by my insurance with no increase in premiums.
