Winnebago Journey steering upgrades

We have a Winnebago Journey 35 ft 2005.

Looking for information regarding steering suspension upgrades. Trying to minimize the rolling and porposing issues. Crosswind improvements, and over all ride quality.

Any information about what is available, and what works would be appreciated!!!
  • Since I've seen a coach like yours on a Freightliner chassis, I have assumed that your coach is also on a Freightliner chassis. The
Freightliner chassis should handle well. It already has front and rear track bars to prevent axle movement. It also has fairly good sway bars.

I'd check for worn or missing bushings on the track bars and the sway bars. Also check the front end for worn components. Check the steering gear box for excessive play (usually adjustable). I removed a lot of excess play from my steering gear box.

The Freightliner bell crank sometimes develops binding, causing a problem with smooth steering. The link below is for the super steer replacement bell crank that has a good reputation. (I still have the original bell crank so I have not experienced this problem).

If you're experiencing "rut tracking", a good steering stabilizer will help. I have the steer safe. It eliminated the rut tracking, but I've noticed no other improvements.

Also, read the third post in the thread linked below for good info on getting a correct front end alignment.

  • After 10 years, one of the first things to check is the sway bar bushings (main and even more likely to be bad-- end link bushings).

They are easy to replace and I strongly recommend polyurethane bushings.
  • We do have the Freightliner chassis. I will look into these issues. Thank you so much for your help on this! Many thanks. We love our ciach but I would like to improve the handling!
  • Agree with the others to make sure your existing suspension components are in good shape... sway bar bushings, end link bushings, etc.

I had a 2002 Journey on a FL XC Chassis and I can say the one modification that I did that made the most significant improvement in handling (especially sway/leaning) was to add the Super Steer Motion Control Units. They are valves that go on the air lines to each air bag and I can tell you it was like driving a different (better) coach.

I also replaced the OEM Bilstein shocks with Koni FSD shocks and that also improved the ride and handling.
  • Where do i find infirmation on the suoer steer motion unit? Thank you very much!!
