Other than individually steerable tandem wheels so they follow each other in the same arc during turns, there's no way around the scrubbing and the trailer guys know it. However, it may be minimum enough scrubbing so many folks don't care about the loss of tread mileage. If a lot of travel is on soft surface roads, then the scrubbing will not reduce tread life to any extent.
I'd like an automotive engineer to describe to me how tandem rear duals can ride better. I'm talking description as in an apples-to-apples comparison of the two dually configurations with all other factors being equal. Comparing the rear end of a Ford E450 chassis to the rear end of a Ducato chassis is probably a long way from just the two dually configurations being different.
