Were there a bunch of trees around? In some trees (particularly poplars, I think) in cold weather, the sap can freeze and cause sticks or branches to break suddenly, making popping noises. More common in colder weather than 28F, though....
I don't think it's legal to hunt during the night in most states; certainly none that I've ever heard of. A hunter would not be firing shot after shot after shot, either.
