Pumps are advertised to be self priming but they seem to be only marginally so. I have used several tricks and always gotten the pump primed. I used a winterizing kit like this. Raising the level of the antifreeze helps. Opening only the low point drain helps. Finally, if all else fails I have taken the input hose and blown the antifreeze into the pump.
