Workhorse Repair Centers?

Anyone familiar with PCM code P1518 for Workhorse W22 8.1 GM engine? Has something to do with throttle actuator module serial data circuit. I got "Low engine power" warning then it quit. Mechanic said it was the TAC or the control module but could not determine which. One told me the book only goes to P1516 and next code was P1574. They sent me to new mechanic that will work on it tomorrow. Any recommendations out there? I googled Workhorse Repair Centers and some listings no longer do workhorse repair.
  • I got that code and had to pull over to the shoulder. I turned the key off, waited about 60 seconds and then restarted the engine. It worked fine for the next 800 miles and three days.
We were heading to ID and part of the trip in ID was through a canyon with no shoulders.
The local Workhorse dealer in Grand Junction CO admitted that he had no way of determining which of the two possibilitys (TAC module and the TAC pedal assembly) was the problem so I bought the two items and replaced both myself.

The large plug on the module and the plug on the pedal assembly each have a connector with a keeper that has to be removed before the tab on the side of the plug can be squeezed to release the connector. The keepers pull up and out of the connector and then the tab can be squeezed.

On the pedal assembly it was easier to remove the three bolts holding it to the bracket and then remove the keeper and connector.
  • From my manual: P1518 - Electronic Throttle Module to PCM Communication

This seems to indicate that there is a communication problem between the two modules. This could be a dirty connector or a frayed wire. There are other codes that would show up if the ECM or throttle module themselves were bad.
If you send me your email address, I will send you the .pdf that I have that covers the codes all of the way up to P3000. In fact I can send you the .pdf's for the chassis codes, body fault codes, DTC manufacturer fault codes, DTC network fault codes, as well as the DTC power train fault codes.
If anyone else wants the trouble codes, just send me your email address. They are pretty small .pdf files.

I had to have mine replaced at Joe's (Workhorse Shop) in Lake Havasu City, AZ. two years ago. It was a fifty dollar repair. Sometimes you can disconnect the module and reconnect it and it will work again according to the mechanic at Joe's. We tried it on my coach to no avail. Good Luck.
  • I owned a 05 w22 that lost power just like you say yours has, had it towed to a Chevrolet dealer which was a WH repair center. Mine was the TCM failed. I would call the Chevy dealers around you some of them work on the WH chasis.
If there is no WH centers around you I would trust a Chevy dealer next.
