I would buy the newest and best maintained vehicle you find. If you buy an old Chevy, Ford, Dodge you are also buying an old stove, an old water heater and old plumbing and electrical systems. An RV is more than just a motor and chassis, which may be easier and cheaper to repair than the "house" systems.
Good point, about not just an old van (mechanically) but also all of the old "house" systems. This is my first motorhome, and I'm not mechanically inclined, so I'd like it to be as pleasant as possible. I thought it might be possible to find a really well maintained older unit, but the more we've discussed this, it's making sense to just buy as new as possible. I've been looking at used Class B's on RV Trader and it looks like $40,000 is the minimum price for a decent one. I may have to increase my my budget to $45,000 + $5000 for contingencies. That's a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I guess pay it now, or pay it later, right? ;)
