Wrecker towing & driveshaft disconnect

Good Sam dispatched a tow truck to tow my 31' Class C 2003 Ford E450 6.8L V10 (4R100 transmission) to my mechanic. The fuel pump had died while sitting in my driveway for a couple of months. When my mechanic received the RV he couldn't shift it into park, and upon further investigation, found the transmission pan loaded with metal. It ran fine prior to having it towed, but now the transmission is shot. The tow company says they towed it properly (front wheels lifted & ~15 miles under 35MPH), but my mechanic thinks they should have disconnected the driveshaft. Does anyone know for sure if the drive shaft should be disconnected prior to towing? I'm finding conflicting info.

Thanks
