Wrong Pump in AZ

Just read about ging to the wrong pump in Arizona at truck stops. If you have 3 axels or over 26,000 lbs rig and your diesel. Fine is 1000 dollars if you use the car pumps.
Did you big guys already know this

  • I'm confused about it also. First exmple; I went to get my AZ drivers license. I told them I drove a MH over 26K. They said I didn't need special licence that it didn't apply to me. Second example. A pick up turned in front of me (his fault). On the accident report the state trooper marked the box stating my MH was under 26K, said it didn't apply. Third example. Fueling at truck stop truck lanes. State trooper pulls in to car lane a few feet away he looks at me and MH. I wave and say hi, he aknowledged me, we finish fueling and drive off.
I have called AZ MVD and asked about the 26K restrictions and have been told not to worry about it. Don't apply to me. ????

You don't have to be a big guy. My 35' National DP on a Freightliner Chassis with two axles, weighs more than 26,000 pounds when loaded. I'm going to guess that almost every DP weighs more. The thing that's not clear is the exact weight criteria AZ is using. My empty weight is less than 26k but my GVWR is over. So the only way to know what the motorhome weighs at any given time is to put in on a scale.

I think the law is pretty clear on the weight: "...road tractor, truck tractor, truck or passenger carrying vehicle having a declared gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds or having more than two axles."

How is "Declared Gross Vehicle Weight" clear? Please define that weight for me for my DP that is registered in California where I'm not required, and have not "Declared" a weight on my motorhome. It's only required that you "declare" a weight here on a commercial vehicle. So when I go to AZ please tell me how clear their law is?
  • I would think the guy giving out tickets would frequent the truck stops. More bang for Arizona's buck
  • So what are we supposed to do if not on the interstate so there is no truck stop? Does every station that has diesel have a special truck pump, or do they just charge you the extra tax?

  • Honestly, I had never heard about the restrictions at the car pumps in AZ. We couldn't fit on the car side anyway pulling our tow vehicle and with a 150 gallon fuel tank, I like the high flow of the truck pumps. Also, it's a apparently $1,000 cheaper on the truck side! LOL!

    Safe travels,
    MM.
