xantrex echo charge

I recently installed a xantrex echo charge for my coach batteries. The question I have is that I placed the charger in the house battery bay and ran the wires to both sets of batteries. I called xantrex about the battery bays being open ventilated and the charger would be exposed to the elements to include water. They said water would ruin the charger. So, I wanted to know what other forum member who own this charger have done to avoid this problem besides covering it with a Tupperware container. thanks todd

  • It is good sense to keep all chargers away from water and ventilated.... this applies to almost every brand.
  • Have had mine mounted in the chassis battery side on the top of the compartment for many years now...yes, ventilated but secure from the elements. I've washed out the compartment several times being aware not to directly spray the echo unit.
  • ok, so just had in it a open ventilated battery compartment and no problems until you directly sprayed water on the charger, correct? maybe this is the same for everyone?
  • I have had the xantrex echo charger in my battery compartment for 10 years without problems. Beaver in Bend, Oregon put one in there 10 years ago and this year I washed my batteries off and sprayed it with water and had to replace it....MY FAULT.
  • xantrex said it had to be ventilated, so covering it completely is not a option, and I didn't want to have to run 20 feet of wire to hook up the 2 sets of house/chassis batteries to include punching holes into my storage bays that are completely sealed off from the elements? not sure what other people have done because most of the chargers are kept in the battery bays I assume and most Rv battery bays are open to elements for ventilation.
  • 1. Mount it in the next sealed bay and just run the wires thru a bulkhead hole to the batteries
    2. The Echo charger is usually used for just the CHASSIS batteries. IF you have an Inverter/Charger, that keeps the coach batteries fully charged and If you have just a CONVERTER, that also keeps the coach batteries fully charged.
  • I would place it where it has some fresh air or open to a larger compartment or living area. For proper cooling I dont think you would want it in a container.
