We have been with Verizon for years, mainly because their coverage is superior. We use a local reseller (Diamond) just because the young guys in their mall kiosks are eager to please, and I find going into an actual Verizon store to be a drag. I don't know why, exactly, but the store are dull and obnoxious. However after buying from a reseller, we get great phone tech support. They will keep trying and trying until they get a problem fixed. I have never paid extra for an air card, opting instead to use EasyTether. Verizon won't admit you can do it, but it works great once you figure out the settings you have to have on the phone.
We have used smartphones - Treo, LG, and currently Samsung - but we find they try to do too much with the phone and most of it doesn't work well. I'm now considering getting a Samsung Galaxy tablet and a basic phone. iPad is just too big and expensive. I have friends with the Samsung who love it. Just about as many attractive apps as the iPad, smaller to fit in my purse. A simple phone to take phone calls and a pad to do everything else. I'm thinking it may work better that way. No interest in changing providers, though.
