Sometimes am short on memories that far back, although for some strange reason can remember $0.69 pound of coffee and you were not charged for coffee or tea when you bought a meal at a café, yep, coffee came free with your meal.But the other day was looking for Southern Biscuits recipes when got to thinking how I changed the brand of shortening to cook with. And one day my Mom came by, opened the refrigerator and asked why I was using Brand X when we all knew Crisco was best. What were the brands of Shortening back then?I did a search on Google and the only other one which comes up is Spry, but am pretty sure there was another brand of white shortening.Do know this is not really RV-related, but would really like some help on this ... and if someone asks me to go look at my old cookbooks or ? Well, in 1991 we had a "between moves storage unit fire", so those are gone. Don't know about the rest of you but when I can't remember something that it bugs me until either (1) finally remember, (2) ask hubby, or (3) go to a forum for the answer .. so help please.

I'm not that old yet, but when I was growing up most everything came from eather the barn or the garden and fat would get rendered on the stove and keep in the fridge. That was back when people didn't thow anything away.

I remember Mrs. Tucker's shortening, and Armour Lard.

Crisco is what my mother used - mostly for pies, etc.

But for frying and most other things that required oil, she kept one of those grease containers with the strainer on the top on the counter for bacon grease. I can see it now - a pink metal container with a black lid. I can't ever remember any vegetable oil or liquid oils of any kind around.

I frequently go to the extreme of making the crust outside on the picnic table (in winter) so I can keep everything cold.

Born in 1935, I remember Crisco and Snowdrift and Fluffo. Pop corn popped in bacon grease was the best flavored bar none. Crisco made the best pie crust
