1960s Brands of Shortening .. which were what ?

Sometimes am short on memories that far back, although for some strange reason can remember $0.69 pound of coffee and you were not charged for coffee or tea when you bought a meal at a café, yep, coffee came free with your meal.

But the other day was looking for Southern Biscuits recipes when got to thinking how I changed the brand of shortening to cook with. And one day my Mom came by, opened the refrigerator and asked why I was using Brand X when we all knew Crisco was best.

What were the brands of Shortening back then?

I did a search on Google and the only other one which comes up is Spry, but am pretty sure there was another brand of white shortening.

Do know this is not really RV-related, but would really like some help on this ... and if someone asks me to go look at my old cookbooks or ? Well, in 1991 we had a "between moves storage unit fire", so those are gone. Don't know about the rest of you but when I can't remember something that it bugs me until either (1) finally remember, (2) ask hubby, or (3) go to a forum for the answer .. so help please.

  • I remember that there were 2 or 3 brands, but unfortunately I don't all the names. I know there was a Swift meat company that had one and one I believe that was called Tuckers. My mother and grandmas used Crisco. They didn't use it for frying unless they were short on lard when cooking meats. The all did potatoes in the vegetable shortening and of course baking.
I suppose it did make sense to fry meats in lard?
  • My mother used Crisco (pure trans-fat).

I use bacon drippings, butter, chicken fat, goose grease and lard (all natural).
  • Who remembers the Loretta Lynn cookbook, that came with Butter flavored Crisco?
  • I'm not that old yet, but when I was growing up most everything came from eather the barn or the garden and fat would get rendered on the stove and keep in the fridge. That was back when people didn't thow anything away.
  • I grew up on Lard and Bacon grease, whole milk, and castor oil! (gotta love our mothers!)
  • I grew up in Calif and we always used Crisco, even way back then.
