Abu Garcia Smoke Dust

Hello All,

DH just found a fish smoker at a flea market. He was so excited you would have thought it was Christmas. He said it brings back fond memories of his family sitting around this little tin box waiting for the fillets to be smoked. But I digress.

We cannot find the dust that goes with it, in the U.S. It's only in England and Scotland. Has anyone bought this before in the U.S.? How does it work to buy overseas?

Any help would be appreciated.
Tricia

  • Dave,
It has a special heat source in the tin that uses rubbing alcohol or sterno in the tin. It is VERY specific dust.

We heard from Abu Garcia and we can only buy it from Europe. I guess that's what we'll have to do.
  • It's not dust, but sawdust and it's available from various sources online. If its still available, the Luhr Jensen is very good and the chips are very small. Alder is good on fish if you can find it, if not apple or pecan would be my choice in that order.
  • Smoking

This stuff is pretty fine, not 'dust'. I've used this in a small smoker with very good results.
  • Tricia, I cut my own smoke wood from fruit trees that the neighbors trim or cut down. I take the limbs and cut silver dollar size slices with my tablesaw. The end result is always a big pile of fruit wood sawdust under the saw. I use this as starter for my bigger chunks. If your dh has a saw, just cut some hardwood, nut or fruit trees to make your own dust.

For any other possible tips, what is the heat source for this smoker?
  • Nope. It very special and is DUST, almost a powder I guess. The tin is Swedish. We'll try to call the company, but I don't foresee any help. It's not listed on their website, and they haven't answered our e-mails.
  • I'm sorry, I don't know the brand's requirements, but can't you just use normal wood chips?
