Cheesy Steak Bake

Cheesy Steak Bake

* 1 pound steak tips
* 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
* 1 cup fontina cheese, grated
* 6 slices bacon, optional
* 2 white onions, thinly sliced
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* 1/2 tablespoon herbs de Provence
* kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

1. Preheat oven to 375º F.
2. If using, cook bacon to personal preference. (Don’t make it too crispy, as it will also be baked later.)
3. In a large pan or skillet over high heat sear steak tips until browned on all sides.
4. Transfer steak to a plate or bowl and drain off fat, leaving 1 tablespoon in the skillet.
5. Reduce heat to medium-low heat and add sliced onion. Season with salt and pepper and sauté for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until onions are softened, translucent and golden brown.
6. Add minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant.
7. Place steak tips in a large baking dish, add bacon strips (if using) and cover with caramelized onions and garlic.
8. Top with both cheeses and sprinkle with herbs de Provence.
9. Place in oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly and steak is cooked through.
10. Remove from oven and serve hot.
  • From the interwebs:

    there is no actual definition of "steak tips" in the USDA glossary, the meat can be, and usually is, simply trimmings from any cut of meat from either the short loin, sirloin or round primals. It often is nothing more than the scraps left over when the butcher trims roasts.

    Call me ignorant, but what the h are steak tips??

    According to the internet, cut up sirloin tip steak.
  • This sounds like a cast iron pan type of thing. I use mine stove to oven often
  • I like corn and rice and of course banana pudding for dessert
  • How do you usually serve this? Standalone? What sides if as an entrée to a meal?
