You can't brown any kind of meat in the average crockpot although there is one on the market that browns and braises:

It's expensive and has a non stick finish which I'm leery of in any pot.
So how do you brown a chicken for a regular slow cooker?
Dry the skin, rub a lil oil on it and place one breast side on a hot griddle or CI skillet until brown. Flip the bird to the other side and when that side is browned, place in crock pot. You can use the rendered fat in the griddle to saute some sliced potatoes or Brussel sprouts.
