In a few weeks were having a family get together. About I think it's about 30 people. It's pot luck, but most people bring more or less the same stuff every year. Cheap hamburgers, hot dogs, potato...

How is cooking shrimp on the grill "over the top". What, you made the folks who brought hotdog rolls feel cheap?
You can always make chili, or wings, or ChiliMac (great in a Dutch Oven) with just some Mac&Cheese, ground beef and Chili mix. Kids love it.
Kabobs are always popular, but again, it's time consuming to make them (though you can do it the day before, and refrigerate), and it may appear to be showing up some people.
Personally, I'd make what I liked, and would imagine that others would probably like it too. No, I'm not trying to alienate anyone, but geez, it doesn't have to be hotdogs and hamburgers.
