Hi all, DW asked me a question yesterday I couldn't answer, we have a Class A with a gas oven and locking door. she wants to know if she can bake lunch/dinner on the road while I'm driving.I honestly have no idea if the oven even works while driving or if it is legal? figured some of you Road veterans could chime in. I thoroughly enjoy the idea of having a hot home cooked meal ready for me after a few hundred miles of driving.

No reason why it shouldn't work, but I also think it is probably not the best idea to have the gas oven on while rolling down the road.

I do. Just make sure it is nothing that can slosh over or use a very over size pan in the oven with a cookie sheet under it.I have done meatloaf, Mac and cheese, turkey breast etc.As for the gas being on I do not see it as any worse than the gas fridge which sits next to the oven in our rig

I don't think there's really a problem with it other than the possibility of a big mess. What if you tap the brakes a bit causing something to slop out of the pot or pan into the bottom of the oven and then it continues to cook for a couple of hours?Bill

We only have our cast iron set in the RV, heavy pans and heavy lids. might help with any sloshing around. not sure I'd feel comfortable with any real messy things in there anyway... Can't think of anything better than the idea of eating my wife's fresh baked cookies in route to a camping getaway.

Just watch the old Lucy Ball and Desi Arnez movie, "The Long Long Trailer" and then see what you think? If you've never seen it, YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST! And no ... my concern is not the gas being turn on either! Just watch the movie!

FYI, we have traveled with the crock-pot plugged into our inverter in the truck before.

Dave I think my worry would be that spill in the oven could turn into something much worse with the flame on and no monitoring.
I never worried about the fridge, but I would about something sliding around in the oven.

Just curious, for those of you that would be nervous or hesitant, what are your concerns? If the flame were to go out, so does the gas. Other than maybe an ancient model, the ovens are controlled by a thermacouple that shuts the gas off if it isn't red hot. It is why we have to push in on the knob and hold a flame to the pilot for an extended period to even light it in the first place.

We have an older C. It specifically states in the manual to not leave the pilot light on while underway.

If we had a newer model that did not have that specific instruction, I might consider it.

We do run out fridge on gas while underway.

I use the crock pot all the time. The negative part of that is the great smells that tempt you to stop traveling sooner than planned. :) I would worry about making a mess by cooking in the oven while traveling down the road. That said. I have no problem with you cooking in the oven while going down the road.

I would not be comfortable with the idea of baking something while driving. I might however endorse using a crock pot and inverter while driving. Put it in the kitchen sink, so if it spills, it will be under control. Hopefully there will not be a accident that will cause everything to fly all over the cockpit!

The risk? Well as stated above, not much more than running the propane all the time and running the refrigerator. Yet I would worry more about a roast chicken flying out of the oven than the refrigerator burning anyone or anything.

The crock pot is making it less risk.

as stated, make sure your dish won't slop over and make a mess, even if you have to make an abrupt stop or hit one of those pavement bumps that jars your teeth and bounces you out of your seat.
We use the crock pot a lot..we put it in the sink with some dish towel padding, etc. and the lid is locked on.

From another perspective, I'll bet you that the food trucks, a.k.a. roach coaches are cooking oven, stove & flat top while driving construction site to construction site on a daily basis.
