We have been making this for years, it's a favorite and easy to make. Based on the same copycat zuppa recipe wanderingaimlessly posted.
Ours uses mild sausage and some red pepper flake. Just not too much, it creeps up on you.
I've also made it with rice or cauliflower to replace the potatoes. Both are good.
No mashing of the potatoes in our version though.
