Potatoes, onions, cabbage make a great soup.
But read the warning label if you mix beans and cabbage in a soup. - bigred1cavExplorerPotatoes, onions, cabbage make a great soup.
- rolling_rhodaExplorerI love colcannon on a cold day. Cut a handful of meat off the hambone. Throw the bone into a pot of water with four quartered potatoes. Bring to a boil. After five minutes add a wedge of cabbage, large enough to make about 1 cup. When potatoes are done, remove them and cabbage from water. mash the potatoes with butter and milk. Chop the cabbage. Add ham and cabbage to the potatoes with cracked black pepper and a knob of butter.

OK then, lets eat!
I couldn't take reading this thread anymore with all the cold rain we had the last few days so ham scraps went into the smoker and beans are now in the pot simmering.
Now, to knock off something from the corn bread thread and dinner will be served!! - INSPECTERBAKEExplorerSlippery Ham Pot Pie the best thing on a cold winter day.:p

For me, definitely split pea soup. DW no longer lets me eat bean soup. :R
Fresh marjoram is key to split pea soup!!! Love this and it is my vote for the ham bone!!! or make any of the other fine ideas and buy some smoked ham hocks and make split pea soup, with fresh marjoram. You will not be sorry... :-)
