We always have problems with sooty flare ups when we cook chicken thighs. We purchased a product called Grill Grates which appear to be some kind of anodized aluminum, and the design has eliminated the problem cooks. They are designed to fit any grill, and we simply put them on top of our existing grates. Probably the best single modification we have ever made to any of our outdoor cooking units

We absolutely love ours. Been using for a couple of years now. Even take a set along to use over the campground fire pit/hibachi at campgrounds. And yes, online only that I know of.

Grill grates are an excellent way to prevent flare-up

I just use a plate setter on our big green egg...indirect heat....awesome! Similar principle....or you can go the redneck way with aluminum foil an poke some holes...lol

There was one of the hundred BBQ shows on TV where everybody used Weber Kettles. They all used these and later I saw where they make one with rounded corners for kettles.

As SWMO mentioned, they are a bit pricey, but are modular locking panels that come in a variety of sizes to retrofit just about any grill. Nice thing is that will last forever if you take care of them, and you can simply move them to new cooking rigs as you need to. So from that aspect, they are a real bargain since you never need to replace rusting, corroded grates

We also use ours on a small campfire, or on the gas grill that attaches to the side of our rig.
