Sounds like you've decided to just use the "working" part of the grill and what you need is a way to raise it high enough so you're safely above whatever table/base you are going to put it on. What about a metal folding table large enough to give you a base. Many of these are available and some are foldable as well. Just a thought.
You could probably take it off the stand and then build a small stand out of unistrut, just enough to keep it from heating table to much.
They will keep trying to force him to get a weber q? Seen these post before, instead of a answer they try and push what they like.
