You don't say what stove you have, liquid or gas, but I've had both over a period of about 60 years. I don't know that I've had you problem however and that makes me wonder if the stove isn't faulty? My complaint is that the burner is small and it takes a while to heat up a pan and that sometimes you can't get enough heat to cook a large mass.
I've grown to appreciate these stoves for the RV. This is an example and it seems there are many many brands and prices of the exact same design. The cans aren't that expensive and are readily available at restaurant supply stores. they are also a good place to check stove prices also.
The stove control is the modern turn all the way clockwise for low and no hoping it stays lit. They are also hot enough to deep fry or use a large wok on.
