Kefir, anyone?

Just wondering if anyone makes their own Kefir with Kefir grains?
For anyone interested: Kefir is a fermented mammalian,(cow, goat, sheep, etc) milk product, with many health benefits. Plain Kefir tastes similar to buttermilk, but can be flavored as you would yogurt. It can be used in cooking and baking, as well as a beverage.
I just found out it's pretty easy to make at home with the Kefir grains. You feed them and they last for years, (think sourdough starter). I just ordered some Kefir grains from Amazon.

  • Jrfamily- Thanks for the ideas. I found this website. Lots of good info. I am currently waiting on milk and water kefir grains to come in the mail. The info on cheese making and fermented vegetables is fascinating. Some people make sourdough starter and beer from their kefir. Good luck and thanks!
  • I have been making kefir for several months. I usually make 2-3 cups of fresh kefir each day. We enjoy a fruit smoothie with our meal every evening. I make my smoothies with 1/2 of a ripe banana, local honey and strawberries or any other fruit I have around.
Kefir is loaded with probiotics which are really good for your digestive system. I would like to try making cheese with it also. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. Remember to share your extra grains with others just in case your grains die. Always have a backup just in case. You can freeze or dehydrate extras for emergency backup. I got mine from kefirlady.com She also sells water kefir grains. I have not tried the water ones.

  • I had never heard of Kefir until Roy brought some home, thinking it was coffee creamer. He didn't buy one bottle, he bought 4 and one taste told me it wasn't creamer. So I read up on it and I think its just like making yogurt.
I didn't know what to do with it so we used it in smoothies and it was really good.
