I love to BBQ, but my 800lb custom wood fired smoker is a little difficult to take on the road. I've tried portable propane smokers with so-so results. Just got this as a birthday present from the family. Green Mountain pellet smoker that's small enough to go in a storage department, electronically controlled, and WiFi enabled so I can control it remotely from my smartphone.

Congrats. Will probably smoke even better as it ages. Interesting that you can control by smart phone.One of our most fondest memories of camping is a campground that is only about an hour away from us on Hood Canal in Puget sound. Every year when the salmon are running, people smoke their salmon right at the campground. Not only the smell of all the smokers going in back of everybody RV, but everybody walking around talking about their brine mix and how long to soak and the different ways people smoke their salmon is interesting. Then about Sunday afternoon after everybody is done smoking, everybody is walking around tasting everybody eles. Fun to see what's the best. Many people also smoke up the oysters they got. But personally, I haven't found a way to make oysters taste good yet. So usually cook up some clam chowder in a Dutch oven using some of my smoked bacon. Lots of smoking forums online. When you find a good recipe, save it to your computer. I've lost some good info when a forum goes down. Right now I'm experimenting with making a small smoked sausage. Sort of a small beef stick "slim jim" type thing. Don't have it perfected yet. But did have to buy some processing stuff. Had to buy some processing stuff because it's hard to get your smoked beef product into the tiny sausage casings. I also like that your smoker is small. Mine is pretty good size and my taneo bed cover won't work when carrying my smoker... to tall.Last year, believe it or not...the guy voted the "best" for smoked salmon was using a cheap, "Lil chief". He would not explain is brining method. But for wood he was using about 2/3 apple and the rest was cherry and oak. :)But I questioned the voting process. yes, it's the Davy Crockett. A buddy got one as a gift this past summer and after seeing how well his worked, I had to have one!

Looks like a great smoker but since I haven't the storage space on or off my TT l'll have to keep smoking on my Weber.. Looking forward to seeing your handiwork on your new toy:).

I see that there is a year end sale going on right now. If the kids get me Visa gift cards for Christmas I might just have to add one of these to the arsenal.

FWIW, GMG makes a nice heavy duty cover for when it's sitting outside and also a heavy duty zippered storage 'bag'. You set the Davey Crockett in the bag and then zipper it shut across the top and sides. It has large carry straps also. But it's still kinda awkward to carry.

My buddy has one and it is really a good machine. The Davy Crockett is on my list as a must have for the coach.

One of the things I really like is how you can set a specific temperature and the grill will hold it till you change it.

Looks good. I currently use a Camp Chef pellet grill at the house, used pretty much weekly for the last couple years since I switched to pellets. The ease of use results in much more use for me. I've been debating getting one like yours for when I retire next year, and start using the 5er a whole lot more often.

As for what's in the pellets, providing you get the ones made for cooking rather than the ones made for heating, all you get is compressed sawdust from hardwood trees. You can get them made from blends of different wood, or single woods like hickory, apple etc. You want to make sure you don't use the ones made for heating as they can be made from softwoods, or sawdust made from treated lumber which can contain chemicals you wouldn't want getting into your food. Pellet grills provide good temperature management, and very nice smoke ring, and will run for hours without needing to be attended to. Perfect for the long smoke time low temperature cooking which results in the best BBQ.
