That's just crazy. "it's the thought that counts" means that the gifts aren't alway perfect or useable but you thought enough about the person to make an effort to recoginize the person.
If it's the thought that counts, and you didn't bother to consider whether or not the person could eat it-then there wasn't that much thought. IMHO-that's the definition of inconsiderate.
You are putting someone in an uncomfortable position. They have to take an imperfect or unusable gift, so they don't hurt the person's feelings. What kind of a gift is that?
