Old Cast Iron
I like to find old cast iron.
I have a piece I call a bean pot it is a small 1 1/2 quart pot with shoulders that come back over sort of like making a kettle. It has a bail mad of iron wire.
The two pieces and mounts for bail are hammer forged or put on in some blacksmith method. There are apparent hammer marks in parts of it especially the bottom. There were some pieces of coke or other impurities from when it was made. The bottom has worn through in places over time. The bottom was never uniformly flat, I guess from the hammer marks. I have no idea how old it is and there is nothing in the way of maker's marks on it. I've simply cleaned it and put stove black on it. I wondered if at one time it had a lid that was attached at one end of the bail and slid over the top but I can determine no marks on this bail of any chafing etc. The bail could have been replaced. Anyone run across something like this and what was it called or it designed to be used for?
