Potato Bombs

I came across a site on the internet for potato bombs and because I had never heard of a potato bomb before, I thought I would try it. It turned out to be the biggest hit of the camping trip.

Take a large baking potato and core it with an apple corer. Plug one end with a piece of the core and then stuff it with what ever you like - cheese, sausage, ham, lunch meats, onions, butter, the list is endless. Wrap it with bacon and then plug the other end with the rest of the core. Wrap in aluminum foil and bake until done. They can be baked in the coals of a camp fire, on the grill, in the oven, any way you like. Served with some sour cream or butter on the side, they are a meal all by them selves.

While we tried various combinations of stuffings, our favorite turned out to be breakfast sausage with onions and cheese on the top.
  • Thanks for the great recipe. I now know what our first breakfast will be the next time we are out camping. I'm wondering if more filled holes will give more flavour or if when the potato is cooked you move it to a casserole dish and add a scrambled egg mixture and cook a little longer till the egg is done. My taste buds are acting like bombs now.

x2! Thought the same thing from the subject line!

Here is what OTHER people do with a potato.
They use a cannon or gun instead of an oven! Apparently considered a sport by some!:B

That was my first thought too, I remember those spud guns. We stuffed a cherry bomb in a hollowed out potato and threw it like a grenade but that is a subject for another thread.:B
  • And speaking of vegetables, who can forget the Soy Bomb guy who jumped on stage with Mr. Zimmerman!

  • I've seen videos of them and questioned whether a 3/4" dia. void was enough to get any appreciable stuffing in a large potato. All the same ingredients on a twice baked potato seemed like it would be more rewarding. Did you make these as a side or as a meal?
