OK, as a former livestock producer, lets get to the heart of this matter.
There's a very vocal and very small minority in this country who are dedicated vegetarians or wanna-be vegetarians. That's fine with me, but the worst of this crowd is dedicated to making ME one too, and I am not willing to go along with that. (Read that PITA and similar) Once that's understood, the techniques used to bring about these aims is "Don't eat the pets, Don't eat Bambi, Animals are contaminated by drugs, disease, worms, etc., etc., It's inhumane (whatever that means), Chickens are raised in cages, Pigs farrow in farrowing crates, Mad cow disease is widespread and pervasive, Animals are your friends, Turkeys should be invited TO dinner not for dinner," and so forth ad-nauseam.
The US food supply is the best in the world and America's farmers are the most concerned with keeping it that way. Legal standards are in place as to proper use of drugs, growth enhancers, and other feed and health additives. In my experience, enforcement of these laws and regulations is good and is getting better. All standards are in constant review and are updated as necessary.
This is not a food safety issue, an emotional issue or any other issue except an issue of a group of people trying to foster a lifestyle on me that I do not choose to follow. When you read this junk, keep this in mind. As a real eye-opener, try attending a PITA meeting. Then you'll understand the real issue here.
If you don't want to eat horse, pig, dog, cat, monkey, or any other meat, DON'T EAT IT but DON'T TELL ME WHAT I HAVE TO EAT OR CANNOT EAT.
