Interesting discussion! We raise cattle. Most of what we raise for our own freezer or for general sale is young. However every year our older cows are sold for food, too, and they are typically 10 years or older. Fast food burger, anyone?
I had to smile at references to not eating horses because they are noble or are like pets. Because to me cows are noble! They are beautiful, curious and docile. DS has raised show cattle and competed with them for several years, and they have all had names. ...And we have a freezer full of beef. Speaking of noble animals, buffalo is very good meat, too.
X2 I agree. I grew up around dairy cattle, way back when. My uncle had a small herd and still milked by hand. He would ring a large bell, and the cows would all come back to the barn, and go into their assigned stalls! They very rarely went into the wrong one.
The were beautiful and productive animals, but I still eat beef.
