slow-cooker ribs?

Has anyone set a rack of ribs in a slow cooker for hours, and then browned them up on the grill?

I'm wondering how the texture comes out? Since a lot of slow cookers are meant to take cheap cuts of beef and turn it into tender stew meat, I wonder if it turns the ribs into mush?

I am not a fan of stew or soups, but I'm looking for a way to cook stuff while driving, and I think a slow cooker is the only way with my rig. So I'm thinking ribs, whole chicken, chili, what else?

I need to measure my sink and find a cooker that'll fit nicely into it.

  • Crock Pot Coca Cola Baby Back Ribs

    Ingredients

1 rack Pork Baby Back Ribs
    1 can Coca-Cola (not diet)
    Your favorite seasonings
1/2 bottle Barbecue Sauce - we use Sweet Baby Ray’s

    Instructions

    1. Season ribs on both sides with your personal favorites.

    2. Wrap ribs around wall of crock pot or if you have more than one rack cut ribs in 3-4 rib sections. We usually have 2 racks.

    3. Pour Coke over ribs and cook for 6-10 hours depending on slow cooker temp settings. We tend to cook the first hour on high then 5 - 6 hours on a lower setting.

    4. Last hour take ribs out of cooker and drain liquid. Put ribs back in cooker then cover ribs with barbecue sauce.

    5. Remove ribs from crock pot/slow cooker, (careful as the meat will be falling off the bones) and serve.
  • My brother told me the easiest rib in crock pot recipe ever.

Place ribs in the pot, as many as you can
Pour in a bottle or two of your favorite BBQ sauce, and about 1 1/2 cups of ketchup, make sure you cover the ribs but not to put more than 1/3 of pot sauce. Once or twice baste the ribs if needed.
Turn on the pot and cook until your desired tenderness.
  • Don't mean to sound ignorant about this, but .... it solely depends on your standards. I'm a BBQ nut, and my ribs are rubbed, smoked, basted, and finished on a grill. I'd no more use a slow cooker than a pressure cooker, or 'boil' them first. However, that's just me, and I don't know what YOU like. I've had ribs in a slow cooker before, and they tasted like ...... BBQ sauce. No flavor. If you want 'average' ribs, and cook them as you drive, your plan will certainly work. You can literally 'cook them off the bone', but I wouldn't cook them that far..

BTW, Sweet Baby Rays for 'store bought' sauce on ribs works great!
  • I've never finished them on the grill, but I have cooked beef short ribs in my crock pot several times and they come out tender and yummy.
I use lemon pepper, garlic powder or minced garlic and canned french onion soup mix.. about half a can if I'm using my little 6 cup crock pot.
  • I've done it like that before, but it's been a while, and I thought they turned out pretty good. I would recommend checking them regularly for the desired texture your looking for. I overcooked mine and they were trying to fall off the bone as I was placing them on the grill. It's trial and error on the time, but an easy way to pre cook em !!!
