I recently saw a crock pot advertised that could brown meat and then switch to slow cook mode. Don't have one; don't know anyone who does, but this sounds like the best of both worlds.

You can do it either way I guess, we just dump the dry mixes over the meat and wash it down by pouring the water over the roast. Works for us. You can mix if you want, don't see how that could hurt anything; might help!

made this recipe many times, I have always mixed the packets with water first, then poured this over the roast.

Never tried adding the packets dry mixed.

The OP's recipe is very similar to one I've used for several years and it works great. It's the only way I will make roast in the slow cooker.

I made this the other day and it was absolutely wonderful. I used beef stock instead of water. When it was done I sliced it up and pulled the potatoes and carrots out of the liquid. Then I made a rue with butter and flour and added some of the liquid to it a little at a time and made gravy. The wife,daughter,her hubby and grand daughter devoured it. YUMMY-YUMMY-YUMMY!!!!!

I didn't do a Dave, but I was close. I turned the crockpot on with everything in it. Went to work, and came home expecting a nice juicy dinner. Got home and realized I never put the lid on the crockpot. Had to wait until nearly midnight for my nice juicy dinner.

Browning hamburger??? Well, I do when making my Calico Beans. Depending on the entree, I guess it depends on how much fat you want in the finished product.

I guess I am in that quality vs. speed stage of cooking because always brown any meat for the crock pot and carmelize the onions, my family won't let me do it any other way.
