Not really, not if you want to finish meat.
When I think of smoking, I think of COLD smoking. Cooking meat requires a higher temp.
Me, too...I think the box is a great idea. Brown paper withstands much higher temps than those required for cold smoking, as anyone knows that's ever baked using brown bags.
One caveat, though:
I'd be selective as to the box itself...if one can acquire one made of virgin pulp it would have far fewer contaminants than one made of a high proportion of recycled materials which can outgas unpleasantly and possibly flavor the meat.
