Smoking on a Volcano

I have gotten into dutch oven cooking while camping and have been experiencing so great food. At home I like to dabble with smoking food and thought to combine the two. Why not?
For the dutch oven I like to use a Volcano Grill. Unbelievably versatile and convenient for not only dutch oven cooking, but also as a grill and more. I bought the "Lid" as they call it, and want to use it with the A-Maze-N tube smoker I use at home with my gas grill. Get some awesome results using this tube at home, so thought, why not try it camping. Maybe some cold smoked cheese?
Any thoughts?
  • Smoking on a Volcano

I think I saw a couple of 'No Smoking' signs posted on Kilauea when I was there!

    :B

Seriously though. That camping stove is just a killer.
I've been waiting to hear from someone that bought it and have used it to see if it is worth buying.
  • Sounds like a good idea. How big is the smoker? At 12" diameter (on the Volcano), there isn't a lot of real estate on the grill. Volcanos rock!
  • GaryKH: yes the grill isn't the largest, but for two people it's great. Hope to hit the UP of Michigan and get some local cheese. Take the expandable tube full of pellets and smoke enough cheese for the two of us for the entire trip.
  • For true combining, put meat in the smoke for a few hours and finish in the dutch oven. I'd consider it the same as smoking in my smoker and finishing in a foil wrap.
  • Let us know how it turns out. We have a Volcano also & like the versatility of it. This season i'm taking our Dutch Oven with us. The only issue i see is what to do with all the leftovers (minimal space in the fridge). I guess we'll be eating real good LOL!
  • I can relate to the left over problem, but like you said, just eat good. I think I'll follow SuperDave's suggestion and use my smoker tube to smoke a chunk of something for a couple of hours and then throw it into the dutch oven. Might try this on this spring trip and see what I did wrong before going to the NDOG in June. There I can find a lot of good ideas and recipes to try. They are well worth attending.
