One of the links above had various methods for calculating the number of coals on top and bottom. That is a good method, until you get into higher elevation. I found that at 9,000', I need about half-again the number of coals I use at 5,000'.
Check the progress of the contents after about half of your planned cooking time. You can add coals then, if you are not pleased with the progress.
Also, recipes and coal-count are just guidelines. Your ingredients and environmental factors will likely change your cook time every time you make a similar recipe. Dutch ovens are a great way to cook for 4 or more people. Have fun learning about DO cooking (by doing it, not just reading about it)!
