Sous Vide cooking

I built a sous vide cooker using a crock pot and the instructions I found on this web site.
I have made steaks twice and they have come out so good ! Done perfect based on what temp you set it.
I think this will work great in the RV... just set it up, and go about whatever you want to do that day, when you get back, take the steaks out and sear them for a few seconds, for looks mainly, and you are good to go. I'll be trying chicken tomorrow.

Anyone else here do sous vide ?

  • That was an ad for something. Actually, I think I can build it for about $30 if I buy from China.

Such positive feedback for a great idea. The controller is under $40 BTW.
A Sous Vide cooker off the shelf starts at $400.

I'm going to have mine built by Christmas.

    that link showed $99
can't you do the same thing with an induction cooktop?

The title at the top of the article is

"Sous Vide cooker for less than $40"

You might be able to use an induction cooker with temp control but I don't think it would be as precise. Not to mention you can't get one for less than $40.

It's easy to dry out fish on the grill. Can't wait to try Salmon cooked in my Sous Vide.

I know that it said $40 at the top. there was a $99 figure on the right that isn't there anymore???

  • IF you are interested go for it.......
Seems like a lot of trouble in order to cook

And that comment about getting a steak med-rare being tough to do

Guess that little bit of info was lost on a lot of grill cooks......professional and backyard. Never have had a dried out med-rare steak
Well done hockey puck sure thing.........but not even a medium steak needs to be dried out

    Oh well......to each their own
    Ain't that grand!

Not my cup of tea either. I noticed the website didn't show a photo of the resulting steak.

Cave man style is what I like for my steaks.

  • That looks interesting. I do wonder if the control box doesn't need some ventilation? It appears that the temperature unit is.
  • I will be now. thanks for the link.
We are nearly vegetarian, mostly for health reasons. Every few months I will buy two
2-3" thick Organic grass fed filets. They are hard to cook to get the middle med rare without drying out the outsides. This will be perfect. I have seen hamburgers cooked this way to 130 then deep fried for a few minutes.

We don't have a vacuum sealer. We use the ziplock brand vac bags. Have you tried those? My guess they would leak. Have to start looking for one.
