The responses to this thread just reinforces what I've always known all along. Thanksgiving is all about traditions, memories and smells. Most of us do what we do because that is what we were brought up to do and Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without it. Whichever way you and your family do it, someone else's way will never be wrong. My mom used to put the turkey in just before we headed off to church. Opening the door when we got home and getting hit in the face with that wonderful aroma will always stick in my head.
Several years ago a restaurant in town started smoking big turkeys, and you could pick them up Thanksgiving morning fresh out of the smoker. I thought it was great fun for a change! I did it a few years in a row (the turkey was divine and cooked to perfection!!!).. or so I thought. On Halloween one year my adult daughter begged me NOT to do that anymore as it was just NOT the same as the traditional meal she grew up with. Point noted..back to cooking the turkey at home. After all.. it IS allll about long standing family traditions.
Back to "building memories" as Super_Dave put it.. coming to mom's house and having all those deeelish aromas saturate you when you walk in! The BEST!
Thanks for the reminder SD!!
