I agree with you, Lynn. I serve either white potatoes OR sweet potatoes as a starch, usually baked or as oven-baked fries.
But I would not typically serve both at the same time, any more than I would serve rice and pasta at the same meal.
The only exception to this rule I've ever seen would be at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners when sometimes family gatherings have had both.
