That would be polar opposite of typical. Tri tip is cooked to medium rare to medium at 135 - 140 internal temp. I like to marinate mine whole or cut steaks out of it.
X2, and I've probably done over 100 of them. For me, it usually works out to about 20 minutes on each side on my Weber gas bbq at Med to Med high heat. I normally use a rub with mine.
