The way I heard it was that stovetop pressure cookers were very popular, pre WW2. They became 'dangerous' during the war as cheap aluminum was available as steel went to war effort. That's when they got a bad reputation for blowing up. Now, they are available in steel, with safety features. Electric ones are super convenient. They are very useful, and wonderful, (IMHO)!
